Neon SEEN. by Esjay

When I was in Grade 9, one of my best friends, Jenna, and I were tasked with completing a science experiment for school.

At the time, a South African yacht had recently capsized, and search teams were working around the clock trying to locate it. The yacht had a white hull, which made it incredibly difficult to spot amongst the deep blue ocean and white-capped waves.

As only fourteen-year-olds can, we thought we had the solution.

“What if boats were neon colours?” Surely a bright neon yellow or neon pink hull would stand out far more clearly against the sea. So, with the enthusiasm that only a school project can inspire, we painted small wooden boats in different colours and convinced my dad to paddle them out into the ocean. We photographed them from shore and documented the results of our experiment.

The outcome was undeniable.

The neon yellow and neon pink boats were dramatically easier to see than any of the others. There was no debate. They stood out instantly.

For some reason, that little experiment has stayed with me ever since.

Years later, that same thinking has found its way into Esjay.
